I promised this to multiple people earlier last week, but the number of pictures to go through (just mine) was incredible and my only real desire last week was to catch up on sleep. I didn’t really choose the best pictures as much as the pictures I thought gave a good idea of how things unfolded. Also, I found most of the pictures I was looking forward to were ruined by random people getting in the shots…

Spoiler alert: there are a lot of pictures of ruins. I like ruins. They probably look the same or mean nothing to you, but bear with me.

Because it takes too long to insert images individually like I originally planned to, hopefully I can make picture captions meaningful enough…

Lima Part 1

After a long and tiring journey to Lima, I had a 15 hour layover until our Cuzco flight, and Leo and Jacob weren’t scheduled to arrive until 11 pm. Luckily the airport had lockers to store my baggage, and some tourism people found me some dinner with native Peruvian dancing near the Plaza de Armas. I met some locals there, ate some ridiculously tasty alpaca, and dropped way too much money on pisco sours, which aren’t very yummy.

Cuzco

After my short Lima expedition, Leo, Jacob and I hung out in the airport until our early morning flight. We proceeded to spend most of the next few days exploring Cuzco, eating food, and saying no gracias to the locals pawning off their goods. Also, in case you were wondering, and building larger than two stories in Cuzco is likely a Cathedral.

Inca Trail

The first day was a “practice” day, but was probably the second toughest day behind day 2, which was also the longest. Day 3 was fairly relaxing, and day 4 was a race against everyone else to get to Machu Picchu. Our days generally went: get up, have tea, breakfast, hike, lunch, hike, tea and snack, dinner, bed. Our porters afforded us the luxury of just walking, hiking, and sleeping, preparing everything and sometimes waiting on us.

Upon arrival at the Sun Gate, the place to get that iconic picture of Machu Picchu, we were greeted with cloudy skies. Fortunately, the clouds parted on our hike down and we were able to get some solid shots of Machu Picchu in the clouds.

Lima Part 2

Being fairly tired and picking up a cold after the trek, we mainly just hung out around Lima. I was tired of being a tourist, so I hardly took pictures of stuff.

I was paged this morning, so I’m up extra early, and, while I’m waiting for a deployment to finish, I thought I’d do some blog work.

Current observations and subsequent realizations :

I’m incredibly hungry: i should eat breakfast

leo‘s no longer one of my biggest tags!: he will be again after this post

xkcd cartoon: complete and utter truth

Grim Optimism: Woke up early, but not early enough. Reminds me of the subject of my dreams

32nm: I feel bad for my former employer, then really happy I was never given the slip…

Deep Throat dies: why was Mark Felt called Deep Throat again? According to the love of my life:

Howard Simons, the managing editor of the Post during Watergate, dubbed the secret informant “Deep Throat” as an allusion to the notorious eponymous pornographic movie which was a mainstream cause célèbre at the time. The name was also a play on the journalism term “deep background,” referring to information provided by a secret source that, by agreement, will not be reported directly.

Being as far too many days have past, and my memory/excitement only last for so long, I’ll keep this short. So Wednesday was Amazon’s Seattle All Hands Meeting, where just about everyone working in Seattle come together to get an update on the company (Q3 results, what we’re working on, etc). I probably can’t say much about it anyways, simply because it’s supposed to be confidential.

Anywho, probably the best moment of the whole thing was when Jeff Bezos pulled out the adorable gun noises Tina Fey’s Palin made on SNL (http://www.hulu.com/watch/36863/saturday-night-live-couric–palin-open#s-p1-st-i1) while discussing the election.

Also, Tom Cruise ended up showing up and sticking around for a short interview about randomness. He didn’t really seem overly excited to be there, but still kind of cool. The only reason he was there was because we were given free access to Valkyrie, which comes out on Christmas. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it because I had a double header that night for my basketball league (which was absolutely killer).

We were also given free tics to Bolt and Madagascar 2, but tickets went out about a half hour after the meeting so I never got to them. I might be able to scrounge some up for Madagascar 2 though… Finally, some perks for working at Amazon.

side note: by the way, I refuse to tag Leo in any future posts to prevent him from become a large tag. I can live with medium tag.

That was a headline of some article i didn’t pay much attention to in my iGoogle. Anyways, it provides the perfect transition to a discussion of Twitter and my failed (lack of) attempt(s) at using this blog to capture personal, daily events.

side bar: Could I have just labeled the post Twitter? Yes. But what fun would that be?

back to the main stage

So, yeah, there isn’t much to say aside from the fact that producing truly private posts is more difficult than it should be, and is not sustainable from a development standpoint.

side bar: Lily Allen is annoying me right now, so if I seem cranky, there you go.

So Twitter? Yeah, Twitter. Leo made me sign up for it the other day, and although I’m still going through the motions (honestly haven’t used it much at all), I think it’d be an interesting way of capturing daily events. The obvious gotcha being privacy, but meh. Anyways, between that, and possibly making use of the Facebook status message, I think there’s a possibility of harvesting that information for self-development purposes. I’m contemplating turning this into a larger scale project so I’m holding back on details.

I guess you came all this way for nothing. Huzzah! Disappointment…

Apparently, 8 random people (excluding robots) come to this site (or virajs.com) everyday. I decided I’d give my guests something new, and existent, due to their probable disappointment in clicking the wrong link.

In actuality, this refresh was in the works for a year or so. In further actuality, its root cause is that I decided to keep better track of my life. This endeavor was excited by Demetri Martin, as well as the journal carrying escapades of Leo Romanovsky. The purpose is to better keep track of my life and to determine if I’m going anywhere. How this all works? I’m not sure.

All I know is I can’t, well won’t, numerically analyze my progress Demetri Martin style, or write in a diary every night. Being the nerd that I am, I had to leverage technology. I figured, if anything, I could hack wordpress to allow me to take daily notes, and share what I found funny and interesting along the way.
